My name is Alpha Barry and I am a rising sophomore at the College of William and Mary. I am currently interning at The Boys Initiative, a non-profit organization aiming to influence change and create a nationwide impact on policy by raising awareness on the issues affecting the masculine youth of America. My area of work currently focuses on the issues of minority young males. Before interning at the Boys Initiative, I had the experience of doing hours upon hours of volunteer work in Ashburn, Virginia, particularly with the American Cancer Society, the Salvation Army, and the local Pet Smart Adoption in Virginia. Furthermore in college I have so far been heavily involved with minority organizations such as the Muslim Student Association and the African Cultural Society. These experiences have helped shape my world view and have instilled in me a great love of service not only to my community but to causes greater than me. As a result I am very excited and passionate about working at the budding non-profit organization that is The Boys Initiative.
Laura Porter
My name is Laura Porter and I am a sophomore at the George Washington University double-majoring in Psychology and Journalism. After working in a public school in Houston, TX, I became inspired to empower young men and women who have definite potential, but do not have necessary resources. In 2010, I worked for an organization called “Life Pieces to Masterpieces”.It is an after school program for boys living in DC’s Wards 7 and 8.After my time at Life Pieces, I moved on to intern in the Department of Education’s Office of Legislative and Congressional Affairs. Both of these opportunities are of great value to me in my work today. At The Boys Initiative, I am a social media intern.I really enjoy working here and get valuable hands on experience working with our outreach sites. The Boys Initiative is a powerful and budding nonprofit, and I am very excited to be a part of this movement.
